It has been providing the best quality for a decade now. This to me was truly amazing. Will be lighter than the four stroke and spin up in RPMs alot faster than the four stroke.

I think the four stroke engines are heavier and i have been told they do not have the torque of a two strokego with the optimaxmy neighbor has a 135 optimax and he loves ityou are going with one of the best outboards out. I lost exactly 2 miles per hour in my top speed. Not by a bunch.

Optis are clean 2-strokes. Mercury sells 4-strokes from 4 hp to 275 hp including its Verado line and OptiMax direct injection 2-strokes from 75 hp to 225 hp. The 4-stroke gets slightly better fuel economy but otherwise doesnt measure up very well.

So Id say the Opti will be 1-15 mph faster but if I were you Id go with the 4-stroke. Wellwith the Optimax being a two stroke DFI direct fuel injection motorit. Removed from a running 2007 Verado 275 Outboard with 660 hrs on it See pics for motor id numbers.

Interesting to note its genesis was a collaboration between Mercury Racing and Mercurys consumer outboards division. As a result the Verado has really helped Mercurys reputation and by default helped the reputation of other Mercury products like the Optimax. It is discontinuing its old electronic fuel injection line of 2-strokes this year as part of a commitment the company made to. The Verado fixed the 4 stroke performance problems and was big winner for Mercury from the beginning. T will be interesting if Merc do a tug of war like another brand so famously did years ago to show that they have produced a 4-Stroke that can offer the boater the grunt that boats need. It is an awesome engine for running hard racing etc but a horrible engine for idling around or trolling all day. Locate a current 2003 Mercury catalog and you will see their comparison of the 4-stroke with the 225 Optimax. This is a used powerhead with excellent.

DFI 2-strokes in general beat 4-strokes in holeshot fuel efficiency and top end. Yes having 3L will help a 4-Stroke but the valve train robs HP the engine does not have a power stroke per revolution so as for torque it would not be as much. Acceleration is half what the Optimax accomplishes and top end is slower.

Mercury sells 4-strokes from 4 hp to 275 hp including its Verado line and OptiMax direct injection 2-strokes from 75 hp to 225 hp. That engine is a 30 liter engine detuned for reliability thats capable of 300 hp. Optis are a bit touchy. The EFI I believe is an even better performer but less fuel efficient.

The Verado is not only a 4 stroke but also out weighs my other application by roughly 250 lbs over all. Mercury OptiMax 200 is a two-stroke DFI Direct Fuel Injection engine. The Mercury is newer Technology and is a little louder and not as good on fuel but not that far off of a 4-strokeThe new Smart Gauges work very well to control your RPMs.

The 200 has a V-6 30L engine. The engines best specification is its hole-shot acceleration. The injector shoots a plume of air and fuel droplets about 10 microns in diameter about 89 times smaller than a human hair into each cylinder.
