How To Know If Stator Is Bad

Several signs show that your stator is in bad condition such as no spark weak spark or intermittent spark also known as misfiring. If obviously the occurrence of misfires is a symptom of bad stators and whats more they usually lead to backfires.

The stator coil generates the power for the spark plug and other accessories on small engines Without a stator there would be no spark at all meaning the engine wont run.

How to know if stator is bad. Say you wrap a bag around the lower unit and loose cooling water. If your stator is bad the battery of your ATV will not charge while the ATV is running. This can be caused by several other problems however so the only way to be sure that your stator has gone bad is to perform a series of tests using a multimeter.

How to Know if a Stator is Defective. If the windings get corroded by a dirty engine they can fry themselves. If that happens then the wires short against the flywheel when its on the bike.

Does rps come with stator then how do i know if stator is bad hello Appliance Technician. I could tell my stator was bad because I caught it smoking cigarettes and drinking. It will lead to difficulty in starting the motorcycle or it wont start at all.

The most obvious symptoms of a bad motorcycle stator include no spark weak spark or intermittent spark also known as misfiring. While a stator is dying it can produce a weak spark causing the engine to miss or run poorly. You can check the stator.

Backfires and misfires usually go hand in hand. Ive never seen a Cdi go bad in my life. So now that we know some of the differences and similarities in different yearmodel stators let me list many of the common symptoms of a stator that has gone bad or is going bad.

There are many reasons for a stator to go bad. You CAN NOT check the cdi. If the battery was good under load test if the stator is NOT shorted to ground and the stator is putting out AC voltage then the regulator is bad most likely even if if passed step 2.

You may have too many accessories draining the battery faster than the stator can charge it. These readings are too high or too low you have a bad stator. A stator is basically a generator on earlier model outboards or an alternator on later models.

Check the CDI the statorand coil for powerIf you have power at the stator but not the coilThe CDI is badIf you have power at the coil but not the plugThe coil is bad. If they were loose enough for the coils to move around they can touch the flywheel and some of the wires get cut or some of the coating rubbed off. This is why you can have a bad stator but the engine will still run just very poorly.

Or the problem might be on the other side of the circuit. To know for sure. You can only replace it after you test and eliminate everything else.

AND NO CODES Ohmd the stator and found 1 charge coil bad47 ohms. Clean up the stator bolts too while youre at it. Stator Just replaced the stator in my 07 M1000.

I did the stator test to check for bad ground with a better meter checking each leg of the connector against the negative side of the battery terminal and the meter didnt ring out. The reading of each combination should be the same test leads 1-2 2-3 and 3-1. Then would go into stuter modealmost like a rev limiter or fould plug wouldnt clean up.

Further testing is needed to verify the condition of your stator. Turn the bike off. Austin Home Appliance Technician replied 1 year ago Im sending you a service manualThis is fairly common anytime with these symptoms its recommended to replace both.

The stator itself might be dead and is not sending any current to the battery. I would disconnect the kill switch and try also remove the ground bolts for the coil and clean blind that. Test every lead of the stators connector and note the readings.

Then I did the no load test 5000 rpm and I got 89-90 VAC testing each leg. Crack the throttle and it would rev to about 4800 rpm just enough to keep it moving. There are several cdis on ebay for your machine for around 50.

Just pulling the recoil to see if the headlight flickers means nothing. Lets continue on the next page. This voltage will rise to possibly approaching 100VAC when you rev it on a healthy stator.

If they are different your stator is defective. Look closely at the wires on the stator. Would start and idle fine.

If it only a little low you may be able to rejuvenate your battery with a product called Battery Minder. The AC power windings have nothing to do with the ignition coils on a stator. Hard starts and a poorly running engine can also be clues that your stator needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

If you can disconnect the stator when the bike is running you can measure the AC voltage between pairs at tickover and may get around say 20VAC. If not test your stator. Try swapping plug wires to the other side and see if the issue changes sides.

In my experience even if these readings are good it doesnt necessarily mean that your stator is good. The purpose of the stator is to supply the energy needed to operate the ignition system on an outboard boat motor. To test your stator and determine whether it is bad or not use a multimeter to tell if the appropriate ohms are being produced.

But how do you know if your ATV has a bad stator. If your battery is less than 126 V after sitting a few minutes your battery is shot. What causes a stator to go bad.

So a dirty engine can cause a stator to go bad. I also thought maybe a bad reed swapped reeds and still same problem. This all depends on the size of bike and stator of course.

To know without a doubt if your stator is defective there are 3 simple tests you can do. How do I know if my stator is bad. Symptoms are often worsened as the engine warms up.

Fortunately there are a few ways to tell if your stator is bad. Generally the following is true. If the voltage really drops like 115 volts then either your stator or the rectifier is bad.

Then check for any bare wires that may be rubbing against the frame. As well as running too hot. You will need a multimeter set to Ohms for this test.

A few signs that your ATVs stator is bad include loose faulty or dirty connectors and a battery that will charge with a separate charger but not while the ATV is in use. What does a stator do on an outboard motor. They get old they get hot they break down and they just flat out go bad.

If the stator doesnt generate the spark when it should the ignition can happen all the way into the exhaust system. Check your ownersservice manual for the system amp output for your bike. You said the screws were loose.

Unplug every accessory and see if your battery is charging.
